Making a “SPLASH” with Barnet College and Working Knowledge
Making a “SPLASH” with Barnet College and Working Knowledge
Working Knowledge is a Social Enterprise that has dedicated itself to “Bridging the gap between education and the workplace”. In 2008 they were awarded a National Training Award for their innovative approach.
They run events for 20 to 500 students at a time and each event is tailored to the interests of the student delegates, the requirements of the college and the expectations of local employers.
I was pleased to be able to attend the “SPLASH” event at Barnet College where I was a member of the expert panel.
“SPLASH” is a one day event aimed at giving students an insight into the business world. They’re put into groups and working together they need to come up with a business idea and then work through the operational, sales, marketing, finance and people aspects of bringing their idea to market.
As an expert it was my job to help consult on aspects of their business (in my case this was the product) and at the end of the day the teams came back to present “Dragons Den” style to the experts.
The students were full of enthusiasm about the event and had a great time as well as getting an insight into how business works, working as a team, marketing, finance, sales strategies…I could go on but you get the idea.
I was surprised at how quickly the students not just took on feedback, but they implemented it too. The rate of development from when we first met them to when they presented was fantastic.
Here’s what some of the students thought…
"This Make a Splash has really improved on my knowledge, confidence and creativity. It has also helped me to know how to deal with different people."
"The experts gave a lot of help and advice to take on board."
"The experts helped a lot, as I got information on how businesses are run first hand."
As well as cash (yes cash) students also earn a NCFE Employability Skills qualification.
As a recruiter I talk to young people every day when they’ve applied for jobs we’ve advertised. Many have so much potential, but the issue can be around them articulating exactly what they have to offer employers via CVs and at interview.
I had a great time and I would highly recommend any potential experts to volunteer a day of your time and take part or if you’re a teacher I think all students can benefit so please get in touch with Working Knowledge. Events take place throughout the UK.

The day went brilliantly well from the College's point of view too.
It was highly enjoyable for all involved - see our photos from the day on the Barnet College Flickr page:
