How much should a design manager at a prestigious media brand earn?

Hi,

A client has asked me to benchmark the salary for a senior graphic designer/design manager position.

In short the responsibilities are to lead the creative team, manage internal relationships and deliver compelling creative that helps to increase revenue.

The role is print and digital design, based in London and remit will be UK wide (although this is a global brand).

Are you in a similar job? What do you think is a competitive salary?

I'm thinking this will be between £40k to £60k, but I need to be more precise.

Thanks in advance for your help.

London is a strange area when

London is a strange area when it comes to salary expections. On one hand, it's the business capital (OK the actual capital too!) of the UK and has an image of the most successful jobs.

On the other hand however, there's still a significant recession happening and businesses are all tightening their belts to hit profit targets that don't seem that realistic in the current climate.

Retail looks promising with expectations of an uplift in consumer sentiment and spare cash, and clever businesses are investing in their brand at the moment in order to take advantage of when the markets pick up - this is likely wwhere the skills of a designer will come in. I'd hazard a guess that £35k is the low end for a design manager and I agree that £60k is the high end, but by this time you should be on your way to associate director with additional responsibilities.

Best of luck!
Emma

I agrre with you on this one. I'm a graphic designer and do large format digital printing and I believe £60k is perfect salary for a design manager
